Microalgae
The culture media products from Ensenmi offer distinct advantages in the development and application of Microalgae fermentation. We can tailor specific fermentation culture media products to meet customer needs by considering differences in strains and fermentation processes. Below, we summarize the fermentation durations of Microalgae for different target products, their nitrogen requirements, and the key advantages of Ensenmi fermentation culture media products.
Fermentation Duration for Different Target Products
Producing unsaturated fatty acids through microalgae fermentation is a common industrial approach. Fermentation time depends on the microalgae species and the target product. For DHA production, fermentation typically lasts 3-4 days, which makes yeast peptone an excellent organic nitrogen source for supporting rapid growth. However, for ARA production, fermentation often lasts around 10 days. To ensure a sustained nitrogen supply, inactive yeast powder is often considered the most cost-effective option.
Nitrogen Requirements of Microalgae
For industrial DHA production via microalgae fermentation, the organic nitrogen source must provide readily assimilable nitrogen to support rapid early growth and high biomass accumulation, while also supplying amino acids, small peptides, vitamins, and trace growth factors to maintain metabolic activity and promote lipid synthesis. It should also offer good batch consistency, low impurities, low inhibition, good solubility, and ease of feed control to meet fed-batch fermentation requirements. Since high DHA production usually depends on nitrogen limitation in the later stage to induce lipid accumulation, the nitrogen source should support a ‘growth first, nitrogen control later’ strategy that channels more carbon toward DHA synthesis.
By contrast, industrial ARA production generally requires a longer fermentation cycle, so inactive yeast powder is often used as the organic nitrogen source because of its balanced nutrition, stable release, process reliability, and cost effectiveness. It is rich in amino acids, small peptides, nucleotides, B vitamins, and trace elements, providing microalgae with sustained nitrogen and growth factors throughout the long fermentation process. As the cells are inactivated, they do not continue to grow or compete for substrates, making process control more stable. This makes it well suited for staged feeding and nitrogen-limited induction of ARA accumulation. Compared with inorganic nitrogen sources, inactive yeast powder also improves nutrient balance, reduces growth decline during long cultivation, and lowers contamination risk and batch variation, thereby supporting higher ARA yields and industrial scale-up.
